Student holding a globe — study abroad with Vital Link Consultants

“Free study in Italy” is one of the most searched phrases by Pakistani students right now — and for once, the reality is close to the headline. Italy’s public universities charge very low tuition, and a regional scholarship called DSU can reduce a deserving student’s cost close to zero. Here is exactly how it works, and what you need.

Why Italy is so affordable

Public university tuition in Italy is income-based and commonly falls between about €1,000 and €4,000 per year — a fraction of UK or Australian fees. On top of that, every region runs the DSU scholarship (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) for students whose family income is below its threshold.

What the DSU scholarship can cover

For eligible students, DSU benefits typically include:

  • Full or partial tuition fee exemption
  • Free or subsidised student accommodation
  • Free meals at university canteens
  • A yearly cash grant paid in instalments

Honesty note: DSU is not automatic and not guaranteed. It depends on your family income documents (prepared as an “ISEE parificato” in Italy), your region’s budget and ranking lists, and keeping up your exam credits after the first year. Any consultant who promises you a “guaranteed DSU” is misleading you.

Basic requirements for Pakistani students

  • Bachelor’s: 12 years of education (Matric + Intermediate) · Master’s: a recognised 16-year bachelor’s degree
  • Academic documents attested (IBCC/HEC as applicable) with required translations/legalisation
  • English proof for English-taught programs — some universities accept an MOI certificate, others require IELTS; your university confirms which
  • Pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal — compulsory for the visa
  • Financial proof for the student visa at the level Italian rules require (we confirm the exact current figure in your file)
  • A valid passport

The process, step by step

  1. Free profile assessment & university shortlisting
  2. University application & admission
  3. Universitaly pre-enrolment & document legalisation
  4. Student visa (Type D) application through the Italian Embassy’s authorised channel in Pakistan
  5. Travel, then residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) after arrival
  6. DSU application in your region after enrolment, with your income documents

Timing matters

For the September intake, university deadlines and Universitaly pre-enrolment run in the first half of the year. Starting 8–10 months early is the difference between a smooth file and a missed year.
